## 2-1 Square Roots

**Objectives**: To review square roots and to estimate non perfect square roots.

**CCSS Standard**: 8.NS.1

## perfect square--a number that is the square of a whole number

square root--a number that when multiplied by itself is equal to a perfect square

radical--the symbol used to write square root

**Example: 16 is a perfect square. 4 is the square root because 4 x 4 = 16**

## Perfect Square Practice

This is a great example of answering an open-ended math question. The question posed in the student sample at the left is: Prove that 36 is a perfect square number.
